From the "Did you guys even test it? file:
XBox Video Marketplace downloads WILL stream and allow you to play the video back once enough has been "buffered" or "cached" up.

Gizmodo incorrectly states that when you’ve purchased a TV episode or a Movie from the Video Marketplace that you "have to download the show in its entirety" and that’s not true at all. If they’d really tested the service they’d know this.

When you’ve selected a show, purchased it, and start a download, the content will start to get buffered onto your Xbox. Depending upon your Internet connection speed, your actual download rate from the datacenter where the video resides, how long the show actually is, and its quality (SD vs HD), you will get a notification pop up on the screen that reads "TITLEGOESHERE is Ready To Play" at the bottom of the screen whenever enough of the movie or episode has been "buffered".

Again, it does NOT have to be completely downloaded to start watching it. Everything is encoded in Windows Media… so of course it streams!

EXAMPLE: For a 10 minute standard definition clip of adultSWIM’s "Robot Chicken" to be downloaded over a 3MBit DSL connection in Los Angeles (120MB), your Xbox wll display a "Robot Chicken is Ready to Play!" notification in the middle of your game of Gears of War or whatever you happen to be doing once the download is about 12%-15% complete… or about 15-20 seconds after initiating the purchase.

The faster your download the sooner you’ll be able to start playing your video purchase or rental!

WEBCASTS: Exchange 2007 Technology Overviews

Get Ready for Exchange 2007 Road Show!
Watch it online on IT’s Showtime! by TechNet

Exchange 2007 Architecture and Deployment, Jim McBee
This session introduces new architectural and deployment features in Exchange 2007, including improvements in the installation process, the existence of new server roles specific to E12, and upgrade and migration paths from Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003. It also describes architectural changes to message routing and administrative group design.

Exchange Server 2007 Management, Jim McBee
This session describes new management and monitoring features in Exchange 2007; it presents the new ESM interface, explains and demonstrates the Exchange Management Shell, and highlights some of the new management, reporting, and monitoring capabilities delivered in E12.

Delivering Anywhere Access: Exchange Server 2007 Unified Messaging, Lasse Pettersson
Exchange 2007’s Unified Messaging server role allows you to unify voice, fax, and message data into a single inbox that users can access via the web, through Outlook 2007, or on Windows Mobile or Macintosh clients. This session describes the Unified Messaging server role, introduces the new Outlook Voice Access component, and explains how to integrate it into your existing telephony infrastructure.

Enhancing Messaging with Real-Time Communications, Lasse Pettersson
Messaging and calendaring are important, but sometimes what you need is instantaneous, real-time communications. This session describes how to extend your communications environment with Live Communications Server 2005 and Office Communicator to take advantage of enhanced presence, call control, and Voice over IP capabilities alongside your messaging system.

Any Windows Vista Technical Beta tester that submitted AT LEAST ONE BUG will be receiving a mail providing them with a free license for Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate Edition.  This is the "premier" and "most complete" version of the Windows Vista operating system available, exceeding the capabilities of Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, and Enterprise Editions… and a $399 retail value.

This is basically a big thank you for taking the time to:

  1. Sign up for the Windows Vista beta program, download the software, and install it on a machine.
  2. Learn the procedure to submit a bug, and access the forums to ask about it.
  3. Actually formally submit a bug – no matter how small.

The key here is that you had to actually exercise the bug submission tools, enter information about the conditions of the bug, and what the expected operation should have been… and not just forward on crashes or error incidents through Windows Error Reporting which is nothing more than a button click I might add.  This should be some sweet justice for individuals that truly are "beta testing" and are actually participating in what the beta program exists for, and providing valuable feedback on the software.

So congratulations to all the people that actually did some work during the beta test.  You all deserve it every copy.

Someone I know asked me this question recently:

"What do I do with an application that won’t run for users that don’t have admin rights?"

A good place to start is this webcast:
How to use Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 4.0 to manage application compatibility on Microsoft Windows:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/895129

I had a lot of this archived from back when we released SP2.   The bottom line is that there’s numerous solutions to this.

  • 3RD PARTY SOFTWARE
The easiest "shortcut" is to use MASTsoft’s "RunAs Professional" which allows end users to run specific applications under admin privileges using an encrypted password using an encrypted "execution profile"  http://www.mast-computer.com/c_9-l_en.html.  The key is that the profile is locked to just that applications.  ($300 for 50 users, 1 user for $10)  I actually don’t know anyone that’s done this because it’s not something we recommend generally.
  • DOCUMENTATION
There’s a long article about this in Technet Magazine.  We have a long article about resolving Least Privilege User Accounts called "Problems of Privilege:  Finding & Fixing LUA Bugs" which involves using the ACT4.0 and generally "loosening privileges for specific reg keys & files" that you can propagate using.  A discussion of .INI file mapping key we have for compatibility is in here as well.  http://www.microsoft.com/technet/technetmag/issues/2006/08/LUABugs/
  • COMMUNITY
Then there’s the community.  There’s an entire online site for this exact problem out there called "NonAdmin" with a lot of fixes and resolution pointers that’s partially manned by several friends of mine at Microsoft.  http://nonadmin.editme.com/
  • VIRTUALIZATION
You can also virtualize it.  There’s always running the application within Virtual PC.
  • ENTERPRISE COMPATIBILITY SOLUTIONS
PolicyMaker Application Security provides an enterprise management solution for this as well.  It’s possible to tweak privileges for specific applications during runtime while the user is in LUA using Privilege Manager (formerly Policy Maker Application Security from DesktopStandard).  The tool does not work with Active Directory Group Policy unless you license it however it works for local accounts from what I understand.  Privilege Manager is now available from BeyondTrust and is not part of the Microsoft acquisition of DesktopStandard. http://desktopstandard.com/PolicyMakerApplicationSecurity.aspx

Here’s a few additional articles on the topic.

I guess this went public so it shouldn’t be a big deal to post this.   We’ve been using this tool internally for a while now since it was announced at our company meeting a year ago – one of the geeky fringe benefits of working at the company, I guess.

Microsoft Research has been working with the University of Washington to create 3D models of areas like school campuses, vacation spots, and other places that you’d like to visit virtually however don’t want to look at lousy vector-driven recreations of the buildings and historical monuments.

Microsoft Photosynth is essentially the culmination of this project.  It’s a web-based service that works in tandem with some locally installed Windows software (an ActiveX control) for user-side computation that takes a large collection of photos of a place or an object, analyzes them for similarities, and displays them in a reconstructed three-dimensional space.

With Photosynth you can:

  • Walk or fly through a scene to see photos from any angle.
  • Seamlessly zoom in or out of a photo whether it’s megapixels or gigapixels in size.
  • See where pictures were taken in relation to one another.
  • Find similar photos to the one you’re currently viewing.
  • Send a collection – or a particular view of one – to a friend.

It’s free so give it a look-see!
