“What the heck is Windows Phone 7 Series and why should I care?”

THE PHONE IS NOT A PC
First of all, we’re getting away from one concept that we tried earlier:  The Phone Is NOT a PC.  Apparently, after 10 years in the industry, we’ve come to the conclusion that for the mass market consumer, you can’t shoehorn the PC model – either the user interface or the traditional “I can do anything” usage paradigm into the phone form factor.

• On a PC, you have precision with a mouse & keyboard – On a Phone, you have the inaccuracy of a finger & sometimes a thumb keyboard
• On a PC, you’re focused mostly on the PC & it’s interface – On a Phone, you’re more than likely multitasking, be it walking, driving, etc.
• On a PC, you have lots of display space (“screen real estate”) – On a Phone, you have only a few thing you can display at a time, regardless of resolution
• On a PC, you expect limitless capabilities – On a Phone, you expect to commonly use some very specific capabilities
• On a PC, you have endless bandwidth – On a Phone, you have 3G bandwidth

…and it goes on and on.  We’ve tried and met some success to merge these two worlds together:  The best of your PC with you on your Phone.  Windows Mobile 6.53 is that effort and for 18% of the market, it does a solid job of providing both that PC functionality using a PC usage paradigm in the compact form factor of the phone.

PEOPLE GENERALLY DON’T NEED THEIR PC 24×7
For the average consumer however there just isn’t that expectation.  Our studies have shown that consumers generally want & expect a very focused and consistent set of functionality.  And that functionality should be immediately available at the user’s fingertips, woven into every single object that the phone stores.

Thus our focus on Windows Phone 7 Series has revolved around two principles:

• User-centric design
  • Personal experience – Information specifically pertinent to you & you alone presented up front
  • Multi-touch for maps

    

  • Desktop IE – With Silverlight coming, Adobe announces Flash support as well
  • Beyond Cleartype – Uses new pixel-positioning technology for improved character clarity
  • Outlook – Multi-select w/ attachment view/edit support
  • “Hubs”
    • People – Outlook, Facebook, Gmail.  View w/ Facebook & Twitter integration
    • Pictures – PC sync & cloud sync access (Facebook, Flikr)
    • Office – OneNote view, Sharepoint view
    • Music & Video – EVERY 7 SERIES PHONE WILL BE A ZUNE
      (Music, Video, Podcast, Audiobook, Radio, Marketplace… Pandora integration!)
    • Marketplace – Find & load certified applications & games
    • Games – Xbox LIVE, Gamercard, In-game notifications, current activity
• Integrated experience
  • Calendar – Overlay of RED personal calendar (WindowsLive) & BLUE professional calendar (Exchange)

     

  • Browser – Detection of phone numbers & addresses to click-to-send to dialer or Bing Maps
  • GPS – Autolocate and send to Bing Maps; find regional restaurants
  • HW Partners –Qualcomm, LG, Samsung, Garmin, HTC, HP, Dell, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba
    (Provide keyboards, slates, big, small… however with a consistent experience)
  • Carriers – T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Vodafone, Orange, Telefonica, SFR, Telstra, Deutche-Telecom
  • Microsoft – More accountability for the end-to-end experience (Setting minimum hardware, design & features requirements)

One thing that was important:  We will continue to invest in Windows Mobile 6.5 as the defacto platform for Enterprise customers.

Equally important was what we chose not to show at Mobile World Congress.  It is said that more will be learned over time, and in particular at MIX, our developer event in Vegas.  But to enumerate through what was not discussed or shown:

It’s time to upgrade from the Windows 7 Release Candidate

While most people who tested Windows 7 have now moved to the final version, some are still running the Release Candidate. If you haven’t moved yet, it’s time to replace the RC.

Starting on March 1, 2010 your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Your work will not be saved during the shutdown.

The Windows 7 RC will fully expire on June 1, 2010. Your PC running the Windows 7 RC will continue shutting down every two hours and your files won’t be saved during shutdown. In addition, your wallpaper will change to a solid black background with a persistent message on your desktop. You’ll also get periodic notifications that Windows isn’t genuine. That means your PC may no longer be able to obtain optional updates or downloads requiring genuine Windows validation.

To avoid interruption, please reinstall a prior version of Windows or move to Windows 7. In either case, you’ll need to do a custom (clean) install to replace the RC. As with any clean installation, you’ll need to back up your data then reinstall your applications and restore the data. Microsoft Office 2010 is set to release relatively soon.  One of the capabilities that Enterprise customers will have when they are properly licensed for Office on the desktop, is that they are also licensed to use the Office Web Apps.

What are Office Web Apps?
Office Web Apps are web-based versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote.  They are run on a server and provide users the ability to view & edit actual Office documents (.DOC, .XLS, .PPT, .ONE) using exclusively a modern web-browser that is capable of AJAX, DHTML, and little else.  No Silverlight, no Flash, nothing needs to be installed on the client to provide this functionality.

Are Office Web Apps any good?
What is notable about Office Web Apps is that it provides the BEST fidelity in Office document consumption.  Not only does Office Web Apps render and display Office documents richly and accurately, it allows full editing while maintaining the integrity of the document – i.e. it’ll display it correctly and won’t screw it up when you save, unlike other web-based applications such as Google Docs & Google Spreadsheet.

So what infrastructure is required for Office Web Apps?

Verizon has a new ROM image for the Imagio addressing some issues with radio and memory.  For those of you with the Verizon Imagio, you’ll probably want to download and install this.  Don’t know if it’s announced or anything so grab it while you can.

For folks paying the premium for Solid State storage, speed & performance are obviously of interest to you.  (Otherwise you wouldn’t be paying that 150%-200% margin for less capacity than what could be obtained using magnetics alone.)

So this little find might be of interest to you.  Someone named “elpamyelhsa” from Elpamsoft wrote a tool specifically for SSD users saying, “With all the advice online for SSD hard drives it can take hours of research and fiddling to properly setup your SSD drive.
